The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) is participating in a three-day Capacity-Building Training Workshop hosted by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on the development of a Regional Qualifications Framework (RQF). The workshop, taking place from July 22 to 24, 2025, in Kenya, brings together key stakeholders from the IGAD region under the IGAD-GIZ collaboration.
Representing Kenya at the workshop are the representative of PS – Higher Education & Research, Mr. Adan Abdi, KNQA Council Chairperson, Hon. Stanley Kiptis; KNQA CEO, Dr. Alice Kande; and KNQA Director, Dr. Winnie Bulimo.
This strategic training initiative is designed to support the development, implementation, and harmonization of National Qualifications Frameworks (NQFs) across the IGAD region. It is guided by the IGAD Regional Qualifications Framework (IGADQF) and employs a Competency-Based Approach (CBA) to ensure that qualifications are relevant, outcomes-driven, and aligned with labour market demands.
Objectives and Outcomes
The workshop aims to equip participants with technical knowledge and strategic insights to:
Understand the functions, components, and benefits of NQFs, with a focus on the IGADQF.
Compare regional frameworks such as the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), the Southern African Development Community Qualifications Framework (SADCQF), and the ASEAN Qualifications Reference Framework (AQRF), and identify adaptation strategies applicable in their national contexts.
Evaluate and integrate complementary mechanisms such as quality assurance (QA) systems, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), credit accumulation and transfer systems, and digital tools to enhance learning pathways.
Operationalize the IGADQF through stakeholder engagement, institutional coordination models, and policy alignment.
Develop national roadmaps to support NQF development and alignment with the IGADQF, including exploring sustainable financing mechanisms.
Strengthen regional collaboration through the establishment of peer-learning networks and knowledge-sharing platforms.
