This week, KNQA CEO Dr. Alice Kande represented the Principal Secretary, State Department for TVET — Dr. Esther Muoria — in officially opening a training workshop on the implementation of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) by institutions and industry actors from the South Rift Region.
The workshop was held at Kericho Township TVC and brought together principals and trainers from 19 TVET colleges, as well as industry players who will play a critical role in RPL assessments.
The training sessions, which are happening concurrently across the country, aim to ensure scalability and effective mass roll-out of RPL, thereby maximizing its impact in supporting the Government’s initiative to formalize the informal sector. This sector comprises over 15 million workers who currently possess critical but uncertified skills.
The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) is working collaboratively with the RPL Delivery Unit at the State Department for TVET to ensure effective implementation of RPL.
RPL is a key component of the Kenya National Qualifications Framework. It enables the identification, assessment, and certification of uncertified skills and competencies. As a flexible and inclusive pathway, RPL allows individuals to attain full or partial qualifications by validating their existing knowledge, skills, and competencies. It serves as a conduit for promoting decent employment—especially among the youth—while enhancing productivity, social inclusion, and lifelong learning.
In her remarks, the Principal Secretary appreciated all the stakeholders and urged them to play their respective roles diligently to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of RPL initiatives across the country.
