The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) today hosted a delegation from GIZ, BSZ Erding (Germany), and DEHOGA Bavaria, who paid a courtesy call to explore potential areas of partnership and collaboration. The discussions focused on opportunities for labour mobility between Kenya and Germany, aligning with President Ruto’s economic agenda of creating jobs for young people through skills mobility.
The German delegation highlighted the acute labour shortages facing their country, particularly in the hospitality sector, where many establishments are struggling to remain open due to a lack of skilled workers. To bridge this gap, GIZ is proposing a three-year dual training programme aimed at equipping Kenyan youth with internationally competitive skills. The programme would include one year of training in Kenya—incorporating German language lessons up to B1 proficiency—followed by two years in Germany, combining academic study with hands-on practical training in the hospitality industry.
KNQA will collaborate closely with the proposed implementing institutions to ensure full alignment of the qualifications with KNQF requirements. This partnership is expected to create new pathways for Kenyan youth to access decent employment abroad, strengthen institutional capacity, enhance the global recognition of Kenyan qualifications, and contribute to reducing youth unemployment while addressing Germany’s critical skills shortages.
