Frequently Asked Questions

Does the KNQF recognize the Post-Doctoral Designation?

A post-doctoral position is regarded as a professional designation rather than a formal academic qualification within established qualifications frameworks. It represents an advanced stage of research and scholarly development undertaken after completing a doctoral degree, which is the highest recognized academic credential.

The postdoctoral experience is highly individualized and focused on conducting independent, cutting-edge research in a specialized field, without adhering to a structured curriculum or predetermined learning outcomes.
Post-doctoral fellows do not receive a degree or certification upon completion of their fellowship. Instead, the experience is designed to further enhance their expertise, research abilities, and contributions to their respective disciplines. The true measure of success lies in the originality and impact of their research endeavours, rather than formal assessments or evaluations.

While not a formal qualification, a post-doctoral designation carries significant prestige and esteem within academic and research circles. It is a testament to the unwavering pursuit of knowledge, intellectual curiosity, and the tireless quest to push the boundaries of human understanding. Post-doctoral fellowships are recognized as invaluable professional development opportunities for scholars committed to advancing the frontiers of their fields through ground-breaking research and original
contributions.

Does the KNQF recognize Professorship?

The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) clarifies that the title of "Professor" which represents the highest academic rank within a university department, is not considered a qualification in itself. While institutions have criteria for appointing or promoting individuals to this rank, it does not constitute defined level descriptions or learning outcomes required for qualifications.

herefore, KNQA states that Professorship is an academic rank conferred by a competent awarding body, but it cannot be registered or accredited as a qualification on any level of the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF). This distinction upholds the integrity of the national qualifications system by ensuring that only qualifications meeting prescribed requirements are recognized and accredited within the KNQF.

Are honorary degrees registered on the KNQF?

Unlike conventional degrees, honorary degrees lack clearly defined learning outcomes, approved units of competences, and established assessment protocols. They are conferred as a gesture of respect and appreciation, rather than a validation of academic attainment. Consequently, given the absence of these essential elements, honorary degrees cannot be designated as qualifications within the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF).
The KNQF is a comprehensive portfolio of qualifications that have undergone rigorous evaluation and meet specific standards and criteria. As honorary degrees do not align with these requirements, they are not eligible for registration and inclusion within the KNQF. Instead, they serve as prestigious honours, recognizing individuals' remarkable contributions, while preserving the integrity and distinction of academic qualifications registered under the KNQF.
